NATION CELEBRATES THE SILVER JUBILEE OF
1983 WORLD-CUP WIN…………
25 TH JUNE 1983, WHEN WE REMINISCE THE GRAND VICTORY OF KAPIL DEV’S MEN AT LORD’S, OUR HEARTS POUND WITH JOYS. THE SIGHT OF KAPIL DEV HOLDING THE TROPHY & THE TRI-COLOUR FLUTTERING PROUDLY AT THE LORD’S STADIUM, MADE INDIA PROUD.
THE COUNTRY CAME TO A SCREECHING HALT AS THE MATCH WAS HEARD OVER RICKETY RADIO, AND WE AT OUR NATIVE PLACE, DISTRIBUTED SWEETS. IT WAS SUCH A JUBILATION, EXTRAORDINARY FEAT, HAVING WON THE MAIDEN GLOBAL EVENT OF VICTORY IN THE WORLD-CUP FINAL.
EVERYONE REMEMBERS ONLY THE FINAL MATCH ! BUT INDIA HAD TO OVERCOME A MILLION HURDLES BEFORE ENGINEERING THIS REMARKABLE TRIUMPH. SKIPPER KAPIL DEV’S UNBEATEN KNOCK OF 175 OFF 138 BALLS ( 16 FOURS AND 6 SIXES ) VS ZIMBABWE at TUNBRIDGE WELLS WAS THE BEST EVER INNINGS KNOWN BY INDIA. THE LEGEND SUNIL GAVASKAR REMARKS, ‘PEOPLE DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT A FINE INNINGS IT WAS. THE KNOCK WAS AN INSPIRATION. KAPIL BAILED OUT THE TEAM AGAINST ZIMBABWE. INDIA WAS 17 for 5 WHEN KAPIL WENT TO BAT.’
THE 1983 WORLD-CUP WIN WAS A CROWN BEFITTING A MONARCH (TOI). KAPIL DEV NIKHANJ, ONE OF THE BEST ALL-ROUNDERS EVER, IS INDIA’S ONLY WORLD-CUP WINNING CAPTAIN.
‘TOI’ RIGHTLY SAYS THAT INDIA MAY PERHAPS WIN ANOTHER WORLD-CUP AGAIN SOMETIME BUT IT’S UNLIKELY THAT WE WILL PRODUCE ANOTHER KAPIL DEV. IT’S THE CAMARADERIE IN THE 1983 TEAM & THE CRAE-FREE CRICKET THEY PLAYED STUNNED THE OTHER TEAMS.
THE HISTORIC VICTORY WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT EXCELLENT CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE TEAM MATES. IT WAS A SOLID TEAM WORK. FANTASTIC.

CRICKET : THE MONEY GAME.
Professional Cricketers auctioned like commodities !
IPL is an exciting proposition, no doubt, but whether it will stand the
test of time is a million dollar guess ! IPL is taking cricket into
an uncharted territory.
Eight Franchisees have put in loads of money to buy professional
Cricketers and these 8 teams (mixture from over the world) would be confronting in league matches for six weeks, as everybody knows.
Gordon Godfrey of Bandra puts it, “ My God it’s too much of
Money, but sadly this money will make star cricketers RICHER,
and the benefits won’t trickle down to grass-roots level where it is
really needed.”
Imagine, even Sreesanth making 2 crores ! Sreesanth says (written in
Mumbai Mirror by M. Prasanth in Ahmedabad on 19 Mar) that he was stupid on some occasions but meditation has helped him focus and he
will be different during SA series. But do basic traits ever change ?
Robin Uthappa, who really has still to prove himself on the
International stage, ended up being worth more than Ricky and
Hayden put together !
Rookie like Manoj Tiwary was auctioned for higher price than
tried & tested International players !
VVS Laxman was actually written off from one day cricket.
Anil kumble had retired from one day cricket.
( Many of the old star players must think of announcing their
retirement Gracefully for they have played wonderful cricket for many
years. Some of them are not cut out for T-20. ) Age catches up with every one. Reflexes slow down when the coordination between mind and
muscles dwindles ! Foot work hampers. Technical deficiencies creep into
the play. ( There is always some proper time to bid goodbye to the
game).
Investing Rs.6 crores in M.S.Dhoni when troubled farmers are
commiting suicide next door !
Mr. Ayaz Memon correctly writes (in DNA sports) that if T-20 proliferates
beyond a point, it will eliminate the need to acquire technical expertise
and subsequent generations of batsmen, for instance, may just wanna be
sloggers because that would be the route to glory and money.
It is doubtful whether Wisden would even record the scores of the
T-20 matches, for example: Kolkata versus Mumbai encounter !!
Too much of money is given too soon to youngsters.
Prospect of becoming millionaires by playing more of T-20 is on the cards.
Is IPL good for Indian cricket ? ……..
Yes, from the point of earning substantial amount and lead a
Luxurious life ! Quick bucks in the shortest possible time.
No other form of game can give you millions of dollars for
six weeks of play ! ( No body is concerned whether you
are accountable for your performance!)
I wonder, why all eggs are put in the cricket basket ? May be,
because it has been a game of MahaRajas from the beginning !
Is cricketisation of Hockey possible ? Tough question ?
I dunno, how many have read about the Pune lad SAGAR
KULKARNI Who scripted his name in the cricket record books
by scoring outstanding double century off just 51 balls in T-20
and remained undefeated scoring 219 runs , as reported by Swati
Shinde / TNN. Besides scoring a twin century, which no other
Cricketer has done so far in T-20, Kulkarni also set the record
for most sixes, 18 by an individual in any innings. 27 year old
Kulkarni is a member of Singapore national team and he achieved
this feat against the Singapore Pakistan Cricket Association,
in the T-20 league championship.
(So far, Australia’s Cameron White has scored the highest individual
Score with 141 not out in 70 balls, representing Somerset in July 2006.)
CRICKET PERHAPS NOW BELONGS TO INDIA.
Or is it beginning of the end of pristine values of cricket !
